Earlier this year, a dedicated group of staff and students from Sanborn Elementary (Food Rescue Initiative and Recycling Program and the Sanborn Zero-Waste team) got involved in a school based program that promotes environmental and energy education in the community.

Just recently, this group was notified by the state that they were a winner of the 2016 Secretary's Award for Excellence in Energy & Environmental Education

The Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Matthew Beaton will present the award to them at a ceremony at the Massachusetts State House on Monday, May 2nd at 11 A.M. “This program honors the passion, curiosity and hard work of these educators and students as they study clean energy, recycling, conservation, wildlife and many other pressing issues in our world.”

Sout 2nd Graders Take a Virtual Tour

Mrs. Walsh’s second grade class at South took a virtual field trip recently to several patriotic landmarks. Students worked with Digital Learning Specialist Ms. Kennedy to use an app (Nearpod) on their iPads to take 360° tours of the Statue of Liberty, The Golden Gate Bridge, The Washington Monument, Old Faithful, The Grand Canyon and Mount Rushmore.
In these virtual field trips, students could look around the site, zoom in on details and fully explore the places they could not visit in person during the school day. Students discussed why each landmark was a representation of the US and were really engaged with exploring and sharing their discoveries with each other and with their teachers. Dr. McBride and Dr. Berman were able to join in the on virtual field trip as well.
